What should I do if I get an accident?

Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time. It is something that we don't have control over but what can be done when an accident happens can be decided by us. But first things first, once you receive your auto insurance policy, you need to understand the type of coverage you have and what all is covered in it. There are some insurance policies that will provide coverage for collision with another vehicle and not for accidents with stationary objects like lamp post or a tree. So it is always advisable to know the various clauses in your insurance policy. If you happen to get in an accident then you should follow the below mentioned steps:

Start by determining the true extent of damages or Injuries: Sometimes in the heat of the situation, you overlook a damage area or the extent of injuries. Of course accidents are nerve wracking and can incapacitate your thinking ability at that point of time. It is extremely important to stay calm as panic cam make the existing situation worse. You have to think and investigate how much damage has been caused to your car and if there are any bodily injuries that require immediate medical attention.

The next step is to file a car accident report with the police. This is a must and you need to get the police to file a full report. Also discuss the car accident details only with the police. In an accident, it is often difficult to think clearly and at times, you might even forget something important that might have a bearing on the case. Do not admit to any fault or liability and at the same time give complete description of the accident to the police.

Begin by stating the facts only. This is something that most of you probably know but will forget about when the accident really happens. An important part is getting the personal information of people involved in the accident. Get the name, address, and phone number/mobile number etc of the people involved in the accident. There are other information which will be very useful like the registration number of the other car or vehicle and information about their insurance company as well as vehicle identification number. Most insurance companies register the model/make of car and the vehicle registration number hence getting the right information will prove to be valuable.

The final step is to call you Insurance Agent. You should discuss the details of your accident with the Police and your insurance agent. There should not be a third person involved. Call your insurance agent and inform him/her of the accident and try to get them to the accident site if possible. Calling them to the accident site will help you because the police can then provide a more accurate detail of the accident. This will save a lot of time when you file a claim.

The important thing to remember is stay calm and identify the damages.
