Tips to help you save money on gas

When you buy a car, it becomes an added expenditure on your daily expense list. Car maintenance and re-fuelling is expensive and with the rising cost of gas, it might exceed your budget. Here are some tips that will help you save money on gas.

  1. Always tune up your car so that it is in good condition. Vehicles in poor running condition require more gas.
  2. Always plan your trip in advance so that you don't have to drive more than necessary. Unnecessary miles will require more gas.
  3. These days most of the cars come with air-conditioning but is it really necessary to use ac all the time? Regular use of air-conditioning will reduce your mileage and burn more gas. At the end of the day, you will have to keep filling that tank. Hence, if you use your car air-conditioning when required then it will help you save money on gas. You can also run the air conditioner on a lower setting if it is there. Alternatively, you can turn it on and once it is cool inside the car, you can turn it off and switch on the fan to circulate the cool air. Don't run the air conditioner with your windows open as it will burn more gas.
  4. Before you start your car, check the tire pressure. If the car tires are over-inflated then it will reduce the fuel efficiency.
  5. Don't drive through roads where you will find traffic bottlenecks. You can avoid the traffic by using a different route or you can leave office a little late. Stop and go traffic will burn more gas and reduce mileage.
  6. If you are driving at a high speed, then try to keep the windows closed. The reason behind this is that, open windows will cause additional drag, which will lead to use of more gas.
  7. High speed driving in low gears burn more gas. Avoid it!
  8. There are various types of gasoline available and just because they are high priced doesn't mean they are the best for your car. You can buy normal gasoline, which is advisable for your car and save on a lot of money especially if you are driving to office everyday.
  9. Change to synthetic motor oil as it will reduce engine friction and improve gas mileage
  10. If you add a fuel injector cleaner every time you change oil then this process will keep injector nozzles clean. This will create better combustion and deliver power.
  11. Install a window film especially if you are in the southern climate zone. This will reduce the reduce cabin temperature by 20 degrees and also reduce the need for air conditioning.
  12. Last but not the least, always make sure that the gas cap is locked after filling of gas. According to a report, 147 million gallons of fuel vaporize every year in the U.S due to improper locking of the gas caps.
